INVITATION TO NEW WRITERS
Whether you are a professional or a beginning writer, please read these guidelines carefully. The newspaper has themes and subjects that we do not accept, and others which we are anxious to have. Everyone on the planet owns a digital camera. Take a photo and email it with your story. We ONLY accept stories with photos. Don’t forget to write a photo caption and be sure to accurately identify everyone in the photo with their names spelled correctly.
WHAT IS THE MOTTO OF THIS NEWSPAPER? (NBN)
The motto of this newspaper is No Bad News (NBN). We do NOT print hard news. I.e.: celebrity criminal trials, war, crime, anything sexually explicit, inflammatory political topics, religious extremist content, death, disease, abortion, mental illness, unhappy endings. We will not be your soapbox!
If you feel you must apply a label to this kind of writing, try “light and fluffy”. We want positive news, and only positive news. If you write about Parkinson’s disease, only say “Promising Treatment Found for Parkinson’s disease.” Stay away from sensationalizing any subject. If you want to write articles that would be suitable for the National Enquirer, please do not send them to us.
If you are a business professional who wants to write an advice column that will lead clients to your office, do not send it to us. Since all we have to sell is space, do not write about any business. Those are ads. Our ad department gets upset if we give space away for free.
WHAT DO WE WANT?
We want informative stories about families, Little League and young people’s achievements, fine arts, music, civic and state projects that relate to this community. Stories that inspire a feeling of pride are especially welcome. Society and Sports stories, especially with photos showing people having a good time are wonderful to read.
WHAT ABOUT A WEEKLY COLUMN?
We are looking for weekly columns on specific subjects: sports, cooking, automotive, society, and City Hall.
ARE THESE STORIES HARD TO WRITE?
Good positive news, is not hard to write,
it’s just hard to find, and it is worth your best efforts to find and
write something positive
We do not pay for one-time stories, but we will furnish you a byline as a staff writer for the newspaper. If you write a regular weekly column, or if your story involves unusual expenses (tickets to Lakers game for private interview with Kobe Bryant) we can discuss additional compensation. Some of our regular columnists have access to press seats and press-exclusive events.
HOW MUCH DO I WRITE?
Send us a sample story or column from around 650 to 900 words by email to firstname.lastname@example.org .
WHEN DO I START?
